Common Questions

See some common questions and answers below, or call us at 308 338-3550.

  • How long will it take to receive my prosthesis?

Fabrication and fitting of a prosthesis can take from a few days to several weeks. It depends on your insurance company or payer source and what is required for justification and preauthorization.

  • I live far away and I cannot come to multiple appointments.

We will work with you. If you live far away (>3 hours), we can schedule a day where you are seen and fitted in the morning, Ken builds it, and it will be delivered that evening.

This takes significant planning ahead of time to ensure proper pre-authorization from insurance, doctors' documentation, and obtaining all the necessary parts to fabricate the prosthesis and deliver same-day. However, it is a service we are happy to offer to you.

If this is a service you are interested in, please call us 8 weeks in advance so we have optimal time to collect all the necessary documentation and parts for your prosthesis.

Galileo 3D Printer

The newest technology from Galileo is streamlining the fitting process for the Lower Extremity check socket. After scanning your residual limb, it sends

the results of the scan directly to our

in-house 3D printer and in as quick as 3 hours, it has a custom socket ready to fit.

Myoelectric Prosthesis

This prosthesis uses electrical impulses from muscles around the residual arm or shoulder to activate and control the hand and wrist. It has over 21 different hand positions so you can do anything from holding a shovel or writing with a pen.

  • Ron's Story

Once the decision to amputate my leg was made in 2019, I started searching for information on what to expect and what I had ahead of me. I was surprised to learn that there wasn't specific information and that it varied widely. The general view was that it would be approximately 3 months before I would have a prosthesis and approximately 6 months before I could walk on it.

My surgery went great, and 2 days later, "Dr." Ken Vyvlecka from Family O&P came into my room with a huge smile and a very positive attitude. As he was talking, something caught my attention. He said, "When your last stitch comes out, I will have a socket ready for you. I will get you up on it immediately and get you walking!"

    I BELIEVED HIM!

Ken came to the rehab center to take measurements and cast my stump. 2 weeks and 2 days after my surgery, I walked into the rehab gym where I had been a patient just 2 weeks before. Everyone was thrilled and amazed, including me. They didn't know I had a secret weapon-"Dr." Ken! That crazy guy with a big smile and positive attitude had teamed up with me and done exactly what he said he would do.

My follow-up care has been great, and Ken has created a beautiful, final prosthetic that fits like a glove. If I do have any issues, Ken resolves them quickly. I am very mobile, and I owe it to "That crazy guy with that big smile and positive attitude!"

Thank you, Ken from Family O&P

  • Regina's Story

Family O&P has been a part of my life for a long time. My first appointment was set up before I had my amputation. I had so many questions at my first consultation and my Prosthetist at the time was Eric and he answered every single one. He even brought in a lady who’d had her prosthesis for a while, to visit with me and answer more of my questions. (I put him behind on his other appointments, but he did not rush me one bit!) Eric’s kindness, caring, and professionalism were very appreciated. I later met two other employees that worked for Family O&P who have a prosthesis! This meant so much to me as they could answer questions on a more personal level and could give me feedback on what to anticipate before and after my amputation. I saw Eric for a couple of years and then I started to see Ken, the founder and owner of Family O&P. I don’t even know where to begin to describe this amazing man. One thing is for sure, God brought him into my life! He is the most patient and kind person you will ever meet. If you are struggling Ken will help you. If you are scared Ken will calm those fears. And believe me when I tell you this, if you need to make changes to your prosthesis week, after week, or down the road; Ken will do it with a smile on his face. He will not stop until it is exactly what you want and fits you correctly. You can tell he truly loves his job and cares for his patients. I am proud to say that not only am I one of his patients, but I am also his friend. I also have been able to refer people to Ken who needed a Prosthetist or was struggling and wanted someone new. Each and every one of those individuals was very happy with Ken and so glad I had recommended him! I am so grateful for Family O&P. I tell people I am not disabled because I have a prosthesis. In my situation, I was disabled before my amputation. I can now walk without the severe pain I experienced daily for so many years. If you are considering meeting with a Prosthetist, please do not hesitate to contact Ken at Family O&P. You will not be disappointed.

  • Gary's Story

After having a below-knee amputation, I lay in the hospital wondering what was next. I knew nothing about prosthetic devices. A day or two later, a man walked into my hospital room and introduced himself as Ken from Family O&P. He brought pamphlets and other information and answered some questions about going forward. He assured me that I would be on my feet and walking in 6 weeks.

Ken is knowledgeable, compassionate, and energetic, and has a way of helping a person realize that things are not as bad as they may seem.

  • Harlan's Story

I lost my leg in September 1983. In November 1983, I received my 1st "trainer" leg and was able to walk without crutches. Even though this leg wasn't much, it seemed good to be free to move around and have my hands free. Later on, I received my 1st "true" prosthesis and found I had to learn to walk again with one that actually had a knee. This was scary at first, but after 2 or 3 days, I had it mastered. It was heavy and noisy, but still better than crutches.

In September 1985, I got another new leg. It was much lighter and quieter. I wore this one for several years, and when it got noisy, I could replace the rubber bumper in the knee and it would be good as new. It finally wore out and broke, and was replaced with a pneumatic knee model that had just come out. I wore this one for 12 years until it was worn out and replacement parts were no longer available.

At this time, the new Seattle Select knee, which was also a pneumatic, came out and I was fitted with a new prosthesis using this knee. After several years of ill-fitting sockets and not being able to walk well, it seemed a change was in order.

By a stroke of luck, I found Family O&P and went to them for an adjustment that my former prosthetist would not do. They made the adjustment and asked me to come back a few days later, which I did. Then, after about a 2-hour session with Ken and Jeff, it was decided I needed something different. Somehow they convinced Medicare to pay for it, and they built me a completely different leg. After casting, etc., I received a new prosthesis with a modified MAS socket and a full hydraulic knee that locks when straightened out. There is also a new style of foot that is just great to walk on.

It has taken some minor adjustments to the way I walk, but Ken and Jeff hung in there and got it right.

I must say this is my 1st comfortable prosthesis after more than 23 years, and it is a joy to have one that works properly. I have returned to walking for exercise and enjoy it very much.

What can I say except thank you, Ken and staff, for what you have done for me and for the gracious treatment I have received from all of you. You can be sure I will recommend Family O&P to anyone that needs your services.
